Chess in Brussels, cercle by cercle and café by café
Brussels plays its chess in two languages. French-speaking cercles and Dutch-speaking schaakclubs meet on fixed evenings in community centres, sports halls and café back rooms, from the Marolles to Uccle and just beyond the region. Between club nights there is blitz in a jazz bar off the Grand-Place, a Saturday rapid in an Ixelles café and a free Wednesday table at the Muntpunt library.

Chess960 across the board in Brussels
One club in the city plays Chess960 face to face on a regular evening. The Ixelles Chess Club holds a monthly Thursday evening of it at La Tourelle in Ixelles from 19:00; its page names the third Thursday of the month for Chess 960 and, in another sentence, the second Thursday for a Freestyle evening, so the club's own calendar is the place to check the week. Beyond that evening, no Chess960, Fischer Random or Freestyle tournament turned up in the Belgian rated lists.
In this variant the pieces behind the pawns start in one of 960 shuffled orders, so prepared openings stop mattering from the first move. Between Thursdays it can be played online at ch960.com.
Chess960 evenings found in the Brussels area, as the organiser lists them:
- Monthly Chess 960 evening at La Tourelle, Ixelles (Ixelles Chess Club) — Third Thursday of the month, 19:00; calendar entry Thursday 15 October 2026
About these listings
Each card here rests on pages that anyone can open: the Belgian federation's club register, the international list of rated tournaments, the clubs' own sites, a library programme, a club-made guide to chess in the city. A card shows when its newest trace was dated and what that trace says.
The order of the cards follows the date of their newest evidence; it is not a judgement of quality. Where no page gives an answer, the card says "not stated by sources". The status lines, the source marks and what the index leaves aside are explained on the page how it is made.
Has your club changed evenings or rooms?
Clubs in Brussels move halls, swap a weeknight or open a new course each September. If a card is behind, or a place is missing, send a line with a link to the page that shows it.
